PORTLAND, Ore. – Losing 5-0 is going to leave a mark.

And for the members of the Portland Timbers defense, the scars from their lopsided defeat two weeks ago at FC Dallas are still fresh.

For them, it's personal.

“For sure,” said central defender David Horst, who will get his first shot at revenge when FCD meet the Timbers on their turf Sunday at JELD-WEN Field (7 pm ET, NBCSN, Live Chat on MLSsoccer.com). “Not just the defense, but the whole team, the whole organization. We definitely weren’t happy with that game at all, so we’re going out there with a little extra motivation. And we don’t want to let that happen again.”

And if the Timbers are to begin a long climb back to respectability, doing it at home against Dallas would be a fitting place to start. It was at FC Dallas Stadium on July 21 where Portland hit rock bottom with a punchless effort in that 5-0 humiliation.

Interim head coach Gavin Wilkinson called it an embarrassment and said he saw his players quit.

“It was a reality check for us,” defender Steven Smith said. “We knew it wasn’t good enough.”

Horst said they quickly took away the on-field lessons from the performance and then filed it away. But the theme at Timbers camp this week was not tactics or strategy, but more about regaining confidence and a certain “swagger” at home – not to mention extracting a measure of revenge against the team that dealt such a big blow.

“We’ve got to get a little bit of arrogance about ourselves on our home field and then certainly carry that on the road with us,” goalkeeper Troy Perkins said. “We’ve got to have a chip on our shoulder everywhere we go now and really be a little upset with the way people think of us and the way people treat us.”

The team was happy with the way they responded in the game following the Dallas result, a dominating performance that produced 20 shots but no goals in what became a dispiriting 1-0 loss to Chivas USA.

Still, Smith sees that game as one to look toward for confidence.

“We created a lot of chances,” Smith said. “As I say, I think we should have won the game or got something from it. We know we’ve got to do something to put [the Dallas game] right. The Chivas game, performance-wise, was a step in the right direction. We didn’t get anything from the game, but it’s a performance we can build on.”

Match Preview: FC Dallas vs. Chivas USA

FC Dallas have matched their club record winless streak of 10 games after the loss at Houston. FCD also went 10 games without a win, July 2-Sept. 10, 2005."I thought that we created some really good chances. We weren't able to put the ball in the goal," said FCD head coach Schellas Hyndman. " … I don't know if we could have won the game. I think that we had played well enough and the momentum had changed once we scored, and I don't know if they would have been able to beat us if we weren't down a man. Once they got the space to make the passes, we didn't get a lot of attack; it was just difficult."Jackson, recalled from a loan spell with Cruzeiro EC in his native Brazil earlier this season, made his seventh consecutive start and scored his first goal of the season."I thought he was excellent," said Hyndman. "I think Jackson was one of the best players on the field. He worked on both sides of the ball, scored a goal and saved one off the line. I don't know how you can get more out of a player."The entrance of Castillo into the FCD lineup was designed to hopefully inject a dose of pace into the club's attack, along with Jackson on the opposite flank."Our game plan was getting Castillo and Jackson one-on-one isolated, and I thought we created some really good chances but weren't able to put the ball in the goal," Hyndman said. "The second half comes around and we get a goal and then we were doing some good things. … Take away the record, but look what's on the field, and I thought we got everything we could out of the players."For the third game in a row, Jair Benitez was sent off in a Texas derby against the Dynamo."I don't know that Houston could've beaten us if we weren't down a man, but we sure as hell made it hard on ourselves again," said Hyndman. "A very disappointing part. Give Houston a lot of credit, they found a way to win the game."After netting twice in two games in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with Panama, Blas Perez was kept out of the team for the Houston match. Scott Sealy made his first start since May 9."Definitely on the possession side I thought we did a great job especially in the first half," said Daniel Hernandez. "Obviously the second half was a little different after the red card, but even after the red card we were still pushing up and had a few chances to score.FC Dallas could have Brek Shea available, who has returned to full training after missing more than a month while he served a three-game suspension."I think he'll be fine," Hyndman said. "He's been out for four weeks or whatever and didn't really have any issues [today]. If we're able to get him on the field [Saturday], he may only be able to go 20 or 30 minutes, but I think he's got to be somebody we're preparing to get on the field." Said Shea: "[The toe] feels good. I felt it a little bit, but nothing too serious. It's more annoying than anything."

Chivas preview Dallas showdown

For just the second time this season, Chivas USA scored more than one goal in a league game (also scoring twice in the win vs. Portland on April 7)."We saw intelligent work; we saw good decisions with the ball which are things that you have to do," said Chivas USA head coach Robin Fraser. "We talked about execution on Saturday night and I thought how we executed in the last 10 minutes of the game or so were definitely a step forward for us. I thought our decisions on the ball were good, our work rate was not to be questioned and I was very proud with the way that we finished."With the Montreal match coming three days after the visit by Real Salt Lake, Juan Pablo Angel was held out of the starting lineup after making his fourth start of the season. Angel came off the substitutes' bench and netted his third goal in the last seven games."With Juan, there were a couple of defensive thoughts, but certainly with him it's about finding good spaces in the box and when he gets the delivery, he scores," said Fraser. "He got a fantastic delivery from Jorge tonight and certainly did very well."Alejandro Moreno was credited with his first goal since April 7, his second on the campaign."It's three points that we really needed. We've done a lot of good things the last month of the season and it's important for us to continue to get three points," Moreno said. "There have been times this year where we deserve a little better from the games and we didn't get the points that we needed, it's about that time for us to get some consistency with our results."Jorge Villafana made his first appearance since May 23 and contributed his first league assist of the season."One of the things that Jorge has been working on for the last year is crossing and he's become a very good and consistent crosser, so the idea for him was to find crossing opportunities," Fraser said. The trip to Dallas will be the first MLS game from The Home Depot Center in a month for Chivas, since their May 23 game at New York."For us it doesn't matter who the next opponent is, we have to continue to improve," Fraser said. "There were some things tonight that certainly we thought we could get better and sharper at. Regardless of who we play, there's going to be that challenge."

TORONTO — To say the Canada-US rivalry has been one-sided for the past few decades would be something of an understatement.

Heading into Sunday’s game at BMO Field in Toronto (7 pm ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet, LIVE CHAT on MLSsoccer.com), the Americans are riding an unbeaten streak that spans 27 years. While the US-Mexico rivalry reigns wholesale soccer kitssupreme among North American nations and perhaps in all of CONCACAF – the 49th parallel rivalry is still a matter of great pride for both teams.

WATCH: US, Canada talk rivalry

“It’s always a biggie,” Canadian forward Simeon Jackson said at a press conference Friday. “They’re our next-door neighbors. Usually next-door neighbors don’t like each other when it comes to derbies, but it’s always going to be intense.”

The last time Canada won a game between the two countries, Igor Vrablic scored both goals as Canada picked up a 2-0 win at BC Place in Vancouver in 1985. Since then, the closest Canada have come is a loss on penalty kicks in the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup and a handful of draws.

“For me at a personal level, I’ve played with one of their teammates – Julian de Guzman – for a few years and it means a lot to me to be able to beat him,” joked American defender Steve Cherundolo. “There was always a little bit of talk back and forth, so it’s an important game for me personally.”

Sunday’s game is part of the centennial celebrations of the Canadian Soccer Association. Canada’s first game after the organization formed as the Dominion of Canada Football Association was a 1-0 win over the United States.

On that day, Canada wore a blue jersey and in the spirit of the occasion; Canada will be wearing a specially designed blue jersey on Sunday as well. In addition, the rivalry between the two sides is a chance to focus on something other than two crucial World Cup qualifiers both sides have upcoming.

“It’s a good distraction, definitely,” said Jackson. “Playing against your neighbors is always a big game and the whole event with the centennial is very big and it’s hopefully going to make a good match as well.”

replica soccer Jersey Nyarko- Chicago captain Pause “has to play” in 2012

Nyarko: Chicago captain Pause "has to play" in 2012
patrick nyarko is adamant that pause has to play in 2012 Photo Credit: Getty Images

Patrick Nyarko couldn’t tell you where he was the first time he met his Chicago Fire teammates in his rookie season, but he still holds at least one vivid memory of that introduction: when Logan Pause came up to him and shook his hand.

“Not everyone will do that,” Nyarko told MLSsoccer.com by phone from the Fire’s training camp in Charleston, S.C. “As a new guy on the team, you have to feel comfortable. You don’t want to feel like an outsider. You want to feel like you’re a part of the family already. I think Logan sees to that.”

Pause wasn’t the Fire’s captain that season; CJ Brown wore the armband in 2008. But Pause learned early in his career what it meant to be a leader. He and former captain Chris Armas, who played the same defensive midfielder position, grew close during the first five years of Pause’s career, and the two still keep in contact.

“I think in every way Chris has had the biggest impact on my professional career and my development through my 20s as a person,” Pause told MLSsoccer.com by phone from Charleston. “I was just blessed to be on the same field as him.”

This season will be Pause’s 10th with the Fire and his second as captain. He’s one of the last remaining links to Chicago’s winning tradition – Gonzalo Segares, who has played in parts of six seasons with the Fire, is the only player who has been with the Fire for more than four years.

He’s the only player remaining from the Fire’s last trip to MLS Cup in 2003, a 4-2 loss to San Jose. He’s played with five Fire originals – Armas, Jesse Marsch, Zach Thornton, Ante Razov and C.J. Brown.

“During my first couple of years, those were the guys that were running things,” Pause said. “I by no means think I’m a link, as an extra added responsibility. I just think that those are the guys that I learned from. I try to do my part in shedding light and letting guys who are less experienced than me learn from what I’ve learned.”

In 2012, at least one midfielder with starting pedigree probably won’t be in the Fire’s starting lineup. Five midfielders who started duwoman soccer jerseyring the Fire’s late surge last season are back, and the Fire acquired former Millonarios midfielder Rafael Robayo in the offseason. That leaves Pause without a guranteed place in the starting XI.

“I’m going to play the best players on our team, always,” coach Frank Klopas said last week when asked whether he’d be compelled to find a place for his captain. “We have the utmost respect for Logan as a player. He’s earned the right to be the captain. But look, if he’s not in good form and he’s not playing well, it’s about making the right decision for the team.”

Last year, Pause was forced to move out of his natural central midfield position when the club acquired former Mexican international Pável Pardo. Now, he plays on the outside, but with more defensive responsibilities than a natural winger.

It might seem logical to sit the player who doesn’t seem to have a natural place in the starting lineup.

Nyarko doesn’t think that can happen.

“He has to play, there is no question about that,” Nyarko said. “He is the team captain. That’s a no-brainer.

“He is the sort of the guy that does the little things. He breaks up plays, he destructs opponents’ flow. Sometimes fans don’t recognize that because obviously they look for the flair, the goal scorers, and all that stuff. But he is one of the most important players on our team.”

The news was not as good elsewhere, with the Stabæk duo of Ricardo Clark and Sean Cunningham ousted by a 2-1 loss at third-flight mites Asker. The former Houston Dynamo midfielder went into the ref's book after just four minutes.

Meanwhile, Steve Clark missed out as Hønefoss were bounced from the tournament on penalty kicks following a 2-2 draw away to second division Mjøndalen. The netminder had to await the renewal of his Norwegian work permit, but is now clear for a return to action in Tippeligaen play this weekend.

FRISCO, Texas – When Scott Sealy signed with FC Dallas for the 2012 season, there were two clear goals for the 31-year-old forward after two injury-riddled seasons in San Jose: provide some leadership for the FCD Homegrown forwards and get through the season healthy.

With four games remaining – plus a potential playoff run – Sealy can look at 2012 as mission accomplished.

“Scott comes out every day with a great work ethic,” head coach Schellas Hycheap soccer uniformndman said. “He comes out and works hard. He tries to really be a positive person and that’s hard when you’re a senior player and not getting a lot of playing time. So I really appreciate his focus, his character and his attitude of, ‘Coach, I’ll do whatever you need me to do.’”

GOAL: Sealy gets on the end of Shea's ball

Despite what Hyndman said about his limited playing time, the truth is the Trinidad and Tobago international forward has seen more time on the field in 2012 than he has in quite some time. Sealy’s eight starts, ironically brought on by a partial injury crisis, are the most he’s had in the league since 2008 and his next game will be his 15thappearance this season.

“This year was all about trying to be healthy and making it through the whole season,” Sealy told MLSsoccer.com “Obviously I didn’t have the start I wanted because I got injured after having a very good preseason … but it all fell into place with David [Ferreira] coming back and getting in a rhythm.”

Things have fallen into place nicely for Sealy during the past two months, as his first two goals in MLS since 2008 aided an FC Dallas side in the midst of a minor miracle run back into the Western Conference playoff picture.

“He’s a player that gives us everything on the field,” Hyndman said. “It doesn’t matter if he’s in for one minute or he’s in for 90 minutes. He gives us everything.”

From a leadership standpoint, Sealy showed his merits in an MLS Reserve League game three weeks ago. The forward was only on the bench as an emergency substitute after playing 90 minutes two days earlier in a club friendly, but when Jonathan Top suffered a twisted ankle in the 21st minute, Sealy was called upon. He eventually scored the 64th-minute game winner to earn the reserves a victory over Colorado.

“Obviously, it’s a different level of play when you get into the first team, but the reserve games are there to make sure you stay sharp,” Sealy said. “So when you do get your opportunities like I did in the Vancouver game, I’m ready to play and bring some energy.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oriol Rosell has cleared the hurdles one bycheap thailand soccer jersey one: trial, negotiations, paperwork, signing, more training and, finally, debut.

Now, after seeing his first action with Sporting Kansas City against D.C. United last weekend, the former Barcelona B midfielder is getting down to the task of securing more playing time with the Eastern Conference leaders.

“I feel great,” Rosell told MLSsoccer.com through an interpreter on Wednesday. “I’ve taken the opportunity to get to know the coaching staff and the other players, to get to bond and learn. Now it’s just about getting minutes in.”

The 20-year-old Rosell, the only Spaniard playing in MLS this season, signed as a discovery player on August 2 and came on to play stoppage time in Saturday’s 2-1 home victory over D.C. United.

That’s a fairly quick progression for manager Peter Vermes, who stresses match fitness and system familiarity as prerequisites for playing with points on the line.

“He’s a good soccer player. I couldn’t take that out of him,” Vermes said on Tuesday. “It’s in there.
