TUKWILA, Wash. – Multiple competitions and matches all across the continent have made the Seattle Sounders’ season a bit more complicated than most.

By winning Wednesday’s CONCACAF Champions League group stage match against Marathón (10 pm ET, Fox Soccer), the Sounders would clinch a spot in the quarterfinals for a second straight year and make the season’s goals a bit more straightforward.

"A win would put it to rest,” Sounders defender Patrick Ianni said prior to leaving for Honduras on Monday. “That [final game of the group stage] won't mean anything and we can just focus on MLS Cup when we get back."

Perhaps showing just how serious they are about taking care of business sooner than later, the Sounders have traveled with many of their starters. Among the starters to make the trip are Eddie Johnson, Fredy Montero, Osvaldo Alonso and Michael Gspurning.

Also making the trip is Mario Martínez, a native of Honduras who got his professional start with Real España, Marathón’s cross-town rival.

“For him, I think it’s a great opportunity,” Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid told the team’s website. “Everyone likes to come back to where they are from and say, 'Hey, I’m doing OK and my team’s good.' I expect a big performance out of him. I think he’s going to be very motivated and want to do well.”

Although Marathón are one of Honduras’ most decorated clubs, this year has not been a good season for them. The team, nicknamed El Monstruo Verde (The Green Monster), is currently tied for last place halfway through the Honduran Primera División’s Apertura season, though have picked up form recently, going unbeaten in their last three.

Having lost at Marathón in their 2010 meeting, the Sounders are determined not to be lulled into a false sense of security.

"I expect it to be a battle,” said Ianni, noting that the grass and weather make any game in Central America a challenge. “I think if we go in with that mentality we'll be all right. Always expect a battle. If it becomes easier, great, but don’t go in there thinking its going to be easy. We've just got to be mentally prepared to battle and we'll be good."

LANDOVER, Md. — US manager Jurgen Klinsmann may have made an appeal for gamesmanship, nastiness and the ability to work referees during matches. But is it even possible? Does the American soccer player’s DNA allow for it?

The most iconic soccer players of this generation doesn’t necessarily think so.

“It’s not really in our character as Americans,” Donovan told MLSsoccer.com after the match. “We try to play the game fair. We don’t really dive. We don’t do those kind of things."

Well, then Klinsmann has one tall order he’s faced with. And he admitted as much during an emotional rollercoaster of a postgame press conference after Wednesday night’s 4-1 exhibition loss to Brazil at FedEx Field.

"Obviously, we don’t want to change the characters [of the players]," he said. "But [nastiness] needs to be developed, certainly. How? I don’t know yet."

Real Salt Lake has 18 games left to play in the 34-game MLS regular season. Only one team has more points.

Yet players from the Utah club are talking about Friday's match against the New England Revolution (10 pm ET, MLS LIVE) as a game in which RSL urgently need a result. Veteran defender Nat Borchers even called it a “must-win” situation.

“It's going to be a big match for us,” he told reporters.

It's a big match because RSL is definitely in need of a win. While There is not exactly an air of desperation around the team yet, the Claret-and-Cobalt have not won since May 17, going six games in all competitions without a win. Those results include home ties against Dallas and Portland and embarrassing losses to lower-division Atlanta in US Open Cup play and at last-place Chivas USA.

RSL and their coach, Jeff Cassar, are determined to stop the skid when New England come to Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday night.

“It's a home game. It's July 4,” Cassar told reporters. “We need three points without a doubt. I would say every game now is extremely important. But anytime you're playing at home, it's key.”

Despite the urgency, do not expect to see captain Kyle Beckerman or goalkeeper Nick Rimando on the field on Friday. Cassar said there is no plan for when the pair, who will be returnGermany Soccer Jerseying to Utah after the US national team was eliminated from the World Cup on Tuesday, will rejoin the team.

“When they come back in town, I'll talk to them and see where they're at,” he said. “But I imagine we're going to have to be smart and give them a little bit of time off. … There's a lot more games left in the season.”

Since RSL entered the league in 2005, it has been a scheduling tradition for the team to play at home on the Fourth of July weekend. Salt Lake have seen little success in those matches, however, going 1-1-7 in those pre-fireworks displays. The lone win came in 2010 — a 5-0 thrashing of none other than New England. But RSL is not expecting anything like that to happen on Friday.

“It's definitely not going to be an easy one,” Cassar said. “They're a good team.”

A good team that also had a bad game on Saturday, losing 3-1 at home to Philadelphia. The Revolution are on a bit of a losing streak themselves, having dropped three MLS matches in a row.

While Borchers remains confident Salt Lake can turn things around, praising his teammates as "one of the best groups I've ever been around" and saying they "react really well to adversity," he acknowledged a need to "have more discipline."

That came on the heels of midfielder Luke Mulholland going into a studs-up challenge and being ejected just eight minutes into last Saturday's 1-0 loss at Chivas USA.

“We've lost three games this year — two of them, we've given up red cards,” Cassar said. “It's hard enough to win with 11, but with 10, it's very hard.”

Brazil Serie A Jerseys Central Winger- Rigidity a creeping problem for US attack

Central Winger: Rigidity a creeping problem for US attack
Edu – Central Winger Photo Credit: Getty Images

If you were to ask just about any fan that watched the United States square off against Brazil and Canada, they would tell you that Jurgen Klinsmann's side played considerably better in their 4-1 loss to the Brazilians than they did in the scoreless draw against the Canadians. And you'll get no argument on that point here.

At first glance, though, the statistics between these two games don't seem to tell the same story. At BMO Field in Toronto, the Americans out-possessed the Canadians 62 percent to 38 percent, completed 584 passes to the hosts' 358, completed 84 percent of their attempted passes in comparison to Canada's 78 percent and attempted more shots on target.

In the match against Brazil, which concluded along a pretty lopsided final scoreline, the Americans had 48.2 percent of possession and only 337 completed passes to Brazil's 418, while attempting fewer shots on target.

Does this mean our perception of the game is wrong?

No. It means the typical soccer boxscore is clearly broken. The statistics it provides are clearly very close to useless. As someone who leans on game statistics heavily to help contextualize a given match, it's very obvious to me that there remains much more to be seen about the sport than these baseline stats can provide.

With the help of Opta's MLS Chalkboards, we can get actual insight into why these top-level stats are just so misleading.

Having a conversation with my friend directly following the Canada game, one of my early criticisms was that the United States played "too rigid." One way to quantify "rigidness" is by looking at the team's positional deviation on a player-by-player basis.

These visualizations, for both the Brazil (left) and Canada game (right), show the shape and size of the horizontal and vertical positional standard deviations from each American starters. Each of these zones are centered around the player's average position. The data points being used are the coordinates of every pass attempted by an American.

While surely cramped more deeply into their own half – and this is to be expected from a game where you concede four goals – it's very clear that the shape of the American system during the Brazil game was considerably more fluid. With many overlapping player zones, it's obvious that Klinsmann was much more concerned with style over shape.

Could a more pragmatic approach have provided a more desirable result? Perhaps – it nearly did when the US faced Brazil during the 2009 Confederations Cup; it did not when the US last faced Brazil, a 2-0 loss in August of 2010 – but that isn't what Klinsmann is looking for. This American side did not sit back, absorb pressure and attack on the counter. This American side created its own opportunities – and it certainly has something to do with this dynamic mixture of positioning.

The Canada game, on the other hand, looks a lot more traditional, and I am unconvinced that's a good thing. The smaller player zones seem to suggest that the players were less inclined to dynamically shift and swap. While this may not always be a good thing for defenders, it's troubling to see how disjoint and isolated Donovan was against an inferior opponent. With the United States opening up its series of World Cup qualifiers against lesser teams, this is a mistake that the United States can't afford to make again.

Argentine league Jerseys Califf to Chivas USA- Not so fast, say Fraser & Domene

Califf to Chivas USA? Not so fast, say Fraser & Domene
Danny Califf Photo Credit: Getty Images

CARSON, Calif. – According to Philadelphia Union head coach Peter Nowak, veteran center back Danny Califf is set to be dealt to Chivas USA. But the deal is far from done, counter Chivas USA head coach Robin Fraser and general manager Jose Domene.

Fraser told reporters on Wednesday that the club is in the “thick of a discussion” regarding Califf and expects a resolution before the weekend, but countered that a move for the center back could still go either way.

“It’s certainly a strange situation, but we are trying to get resolution,” Fraser said. “Certainly every move that we make is with the thought to make the team better and we’re attempting to get resolution as quickly as possible.”

Domene was quick to affirm Fraser’s sentiment regarding Nowak’s comments, "It's definitely been different because that's not the way we do thithailand soccer jerseyngs here."

Rumors of a deal sending Califf to Chivas USA first surfaced last weekend as Nowak and Union sporting director Diego Gutiérrez each made comments suggesting a potential deal. However, the speculation reached a fever pitch on Wednesday when Nowak told reporters that his club had accepted a deal for “a player and something else” in his weekly press conference.

One such deal tossed about throughout the weekend was a move that would send Chivas USA forward Juan Pablo Ángel to PPL Park in exchange for Califf, but Domene was quick to debunk such speculation.

“Juan was never talked about,” the GM said. “Not that I know of, not for us, not from us to them or them to us."

Argentine league Jerseys Red Bulls in talks with possible third Designated Player

Red Bulls in talks with possible third Designated Player

UPPER MONTwholesale soccer kitsCLAIR, N.J. – The New York Red Bulls are making progress in their mission to add a third Designated Player this summer.

Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe revealed to reporters on Wednesday morning that the club is currently in negotiations to bring in a new DP, but he would not elaborate on who it is nor what position he plays.

Backe, however, did emphasize that if the player should join the Red Bulls, it will not be in the coming days.

“It’s always difficult to finish personal terms,” Backe told reporters. “That takes time.”

Backe also touched on the ongoing Luke Rodgers saga, and shockingly there was once again no update despite the Red Bulls claiming they would make a decision over the weekend. In the meantime, New York will look at their options to add depth at striker.

“That’s the target of course to get one quality guy in up front,” Backe said. “[Whether] we trade one or if it’s to buy one from Europe, we don’t really know yet. It takes time. It’s not overnight you do these trades or buying players from Europe.”

While the Red Bulls’ search to add to their thin forward corps is still ongoing, they could soon get a boost in the form of Quincy Amarikwa. The 24-year-old is currently trialing with New York after being released by the Colorado Rapids last month, and he scored the lone Red Bulls’ goal in a Reserve League draw against the New England Revolution this past weekend.

“He played quite OK,” Backe said. “His runs in the attacking game [are] good. Technically, good enough, I must say. But as I told him, I’ve only seen him one game with the reserves and I need to see him four, five times [in] sessions.”

Backe added a decision on Amarikwa, who has also played for the San Jose Earthquakes previously, could be made Saturday.Franco Panizo covers the New York Red Bulls for MLSsoccer.com. He can be reached at Franco8813@gmail.com.
