Argentina Soccer Jerseys Mariner on Toronto FC loss- “No excuse for that first half”_2

OPTA CHALKBOARD: Fire dominate first 45, make it count

“You can come up with all the excuses in the world – international call-ups and injuries to key players. But I was brought up in an environment where you were dying to get your opportunity to play at a great place like BMO Field or Old Trafford or Highbury. And when your chance came, you made sure that you stayed in the team and you made sure that the manager couldn’t drop you. You can draw your own conclusion from what you saw tonight.”

Even though TFC picked up their play following the opening goal of the game, and then ultimately came close to achieving a comeback with some improved play in the second half, Mariner was candid in calling the match the low point of the season for him.

“When I came into this job, I said that I wanted to get some pride back into the shirt,” Mariner said. “We didn’t have a full strength side by any stretch of the imagination, but this is your opportunity to go and show what you can do. And if that is the lads showing what they can do, then we are going to have a serious issue.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio — As much as the US national team players try to tamp it down, the pressure is mounting. In the wake of Friday’s loss to Jamaica, Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against the same Reggae Boyz(8 pm ET, ESPN2, live chat on MLSsoccer.com) is arguably the biggesoccer jersey supplierst, must-win qualifying match for the US since October 2001.

Back then, with just two matches left in the Hexagonal, the US were in fourth place behind Costa Rica, Honduras, and Mexico, in serious danger of failing to qualify for the World Cup in Japan/Korea. They were hosting, as fate would have it, Jamaica at the old Foxboro Stadium in New England. A loss — and possibly even a draw — would all but doom the Americans.

The US got off to a great start, as Joe-Max Moore struck in the third minute. Then Jamie Lawrence, an English league journeyman, equalized in the 13th minute.

Cue the tension. More than an hour later, the US pulled it out Moore converted an 80th-minute penalty to win it, 2-1. That result, coupled with Honduras’ shocking loss at home to Trinidad and Tobago, put the US back in good shape. And a draw the following week in Trinidad saw them through.

The Columbus Crew have two openings on the roster and three players not under contract, but don’t expect coach Robert Warzycha to turn Saturday’s match in the Carolina Challenge Cup into auditions.

“We have to try to put the best team on the field for [Saturday’s] game, to be honest with you,” he said to MLSsoccer.com Friday. “It’s the final test. We need to not only perform well, we need to win.”

There are several reasons for the urgency: The game against D.C. United is the last of a tournament in Charleston, S.C., that has seen the Crew tie the host Battery (USL Pro) 2-2 and lose 1-0 to Chicago.

“We really want to go out with a win and build some momentum for the season,” goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum said.

The match also marks the end of the preseason. The next time the Crew take the field, at Colorado on March 10, real points will be at stake. With that in mind, Warzycha is trying to lock down a starting XI.

“We want the team [Saturday] that will be close to what we have in Colorado,” he said. “Obviously, it depends on how well it works tomorrow.”

He’s not guaranteeing evaluations of 2012 MLS SuperDraft pick midfielder Kevan George, Montenegrin defender Nemanja Vukovic or MLS veteran midfielder Stephane Auvray of Guadeloupe.

“I want to make sure we play the guys who are going to play next Saturday,” Warzycha said.

Vukovic has the best chance of acquiring a contract because left back is still unsettled. The battle is between incumbent Shaun Francis and former New York Red Bull Carlos Mendes, with Vukovic viewed as a backup if he were to procure a contract.

“We’ll have to see how it goes at left back,” Warzycha said.

Even so, Crew technical director Brian Bliss said it’s not given that the team will utilize the maximum 30 roster spots.

“Maybe one of those [trialists], two of those guys, end up getting signed, but we still continue to look for the Designated Player that could potentially come in the summer, so we’ve got some room there,” he said.

The Crew had offers to three potential DPs rebuffed but will revisit the idea of signing one later in the season.

In the meantime, the team have started formal talks with Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica about signing striker Jairo Arrieta before the April 15 transfer window closes.

It’s possible the Crew will leave a vacancy until the outcome of negotiations is known.

Lining up

Offseason signing Olman Vargas is still working to get in shape afteWholesale soccer uniformr an injury prevented the Costa Rican forward from training prior to coming to Columbus.

“He is getting fit, getting up to the speed of play,” Warzycha said. “He is getting better. He is not there yet.”

Another newcomer, Milovan Mirosevic, will either play beneath forward Emilio Rentería or in the center midfield on Saturday. Dilly Duka, just back from US Under-23 camp, will start at left midfield.

HARRISON, N.J. — When Markus Holgersson nailed a second-half goal that put the the New York Red Bulls in the lead against the Houston Dynamo on Friday night, there were a few of the 15,000-plus fans in attendance at Red Bull Arena who celebrated more than the others: Holgersson’s family.

Playing in front of several family members that he rarely gets to spend time with, Holgersson put forth a man-of-the-match-level performance: a clean sheet and the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win that moved the Red Bulls back into first place in the Eastern Conference.

HIGHLIGHTS: NY 2, HOU 0

“It’s always fun to play in front of them, especially since they are not here so often,” said Holgersson after the game. “It’s always fun to do an okay game when they are here.”

Holgersson did more than okay. He fought off a slow start and settled in to put together arguably his best performance of the season. He snuffed out several Dynamo attacks, playing more physically than he has in recent games and doing well to stand up against Macoumba Kandji on all but one occasion.

It was a bit of redemption for Holgersson after struggling mightily against Kandji and the Dynamo in New York’s loss at BBVA Compass Stadium the previous Friday. And his contributions were noted by head coach Hans Backe.

“Overall, he’s been solid defending-wise and that’s what he is, he is a defender,” said Backe. “But I think also he has improved in his attacking game, even if we sometimes during this game had too many final passes from the back four. But that depends a little bit that Houstowoman soccer jerseyn drops. They don’t press that high, they drop and get back in a 4-1-4-1 formation, which is difficult to break down.

“But the back four, there has to be that kind of passion to defend. They’re on the pitch to defend and it’s good that we can have a cleansheet tonight.”

While his defensive efforts might be what Backe signaled out the most, what fans are more likely to remember is Holgersson’s 61st-minute goal which broke the deadlock after the Red Bulls wasted chance after chance. The scenario unfolded when Tim Cahill headed a cross back to a wide-open Holgersson in front of goal, and the Swedish center back tapped it home.

The tally was Holgersson’s second of the season, but it is likely to be just as memorable as his first. Not just because this one was a winner, but because it was a winner that came with his family in attendance.

CARSON, Calif. – According to Philadelphia Union head coach Peter Nowak, veteran center back Danny Califf is set to be dealt to Chivas USA. But the deal is far from done, counter Chivas USA head coach Robin Fraser and general manager Jose Domene.

Fraser told reporters on Wednesday that the club is in the “thick of a discussion” regarding Califf and expects a resolution before the weekend, but countered that a move for the center back could still go either way.

“It’s certainly a strange situation, but we are trying to get resolution,” Fraser said. “Certainly every move that we make is with the thought to make the team better and we’re attempting to get resolution as quickly as possible.”

Domene was quick to affirm Fraser’s sentiment regarding Nowak’s comments, "It's definitely been different because that's not the way we do thithailand soccer jerseyngs here."

Rumors of a deal sending Califf to Chivas USA first surfaced last weekend as Nowak and Union sporting director Diego Gutiérrez each made comments suggesting a potential deal. However, the speculation reached a fever pitch on Wednesday when Nowak told reporters that his club had accepted a deal for “a player and something else” in his weekly press conference.

One such deal tossed about throughout the weekend was a move that would send Chivas USA forward Juan Pablo Ángel to PPL Park in exchange for Califf, but Domene was quick to debunk such speculation.

“Juan was never talked about,” the GM said. “Not that I know of, not for us, not from us to them or them to us."
