CCL: Tired legs not an excuse for LA ahead of TFC clash

CARSON, Calif. – With success comes fixture congestion, something the LA Galaxy have already learned first-hand this year. On Wednesday they went to Toronto with the first XI and came away with a 2-2 draw. Three days later, they suffered through their home opener against Real Salt Lake.

The 3-1 defeat to RSL, punctuated by three late unanswered goals from their Western Conference foe, raised questions about the squad’s fitness after a long week of travelling.

Tired legs led to mistakes and opened the door for RSL to win. So surely LA will struggle in the second leg against Toronto FC on Wednesday at The Homsoccer jersey suppliere Depot Center, right?

Left back Todd Dunivant is not buying it.

“It can be a little overblown too, the fatigue factor,” the Galaxy defender said. “It was mental mistakes and maybe part of that is heavy legs, but it’s kind of a fluke play on the own goal and then we let ourselves down from there. We kind of let the game slip.”

Players may have been feeling the Toronto match against RSL. After all, the team had to cope with a five-hour flight and the after-effects of having played on artificial turf ahead of the match.

This time around, not only did the Galaxy play on grass and stay local, they get an extra day to recover and prepare for the return leg of their quarterfinal series.

“We have an extra day’s rest this time. There’s a big difference between two days off between games and three,” Arena said. “The extra day is important. That brings a lot more players back into the equation.”

Immediately after Saturday’s loss, head coach Bruce Arena said he would have to make changes against TFC, but after Tuesday’s training session – most of which was closed to observers – Arena said the lineup would be dealt with individually.

“We’re going to make all decisions based on how players are feeling and we’re going to put the best team we can on the field and we’re trying to win the game,” he said.

Arena is not going to put players in positions to fail, team captain Landon Donovan said.

“We have some tired legs so we need to make sure we’re being managed properly but Bruce does a good job of that,” Donovan said.

Donovan himself was a bit of a question mark entering the series. Having not trained much for the better part of two weeks due to bronchitis, Donovan was nevertheless in the lineup against both Toronto FC and Real Salt Lake. On Saturday, he appeared stronger than he did in Canada. Fitness, he said, is certainly not an issue with him.

“The games have been good for me because I haven’t trained for a while,” he said. “I’m guessing I probably feel close to the best out of anyone here just because it’s nice to get your fitness back and get going again.”

And if the Galaxy are in position to advance late in Wednesday’s game, tired legs or not, the club will fight through it and try and book a spot in the CCL semifinals.

“You can push through that fatigue a little bit and at least keep a good shell and that’s kind of what we’ve done in the past,” Donovan said. “There won’t be any excuses.”

AMSTERDAM – It was a mixed Saturday bag for Americans playing in Europe, highlighted by a Jermaine Jones winner in Schalke’s 3-1 home win over Augsburg.

Less than a minute past intermission, the midfielder galloped about 40 yards down the right channel before slotting his first goal in 30 Bundesliga games. Jones also struck the post midway through the second frame as the Miners clinbed up to second place through two rounds.

Around the league, Timothy Chandler had a solid outing at right back in FC Nürnberg’s 1-1 share with guests Borussa Dortmund. The result against the champs put Der Club level on points with Schalke.

Fabian Johnson went the distance and Daniel Williams was halftime sub as 10-man Hoffenheim sank to the bottom of the table with a 4-0 defeat to visiting Eintracht Frankfurt. The former lost his left back mark at the back post on the last minute capper.

Americans: Josh Gatt (Molde),Chad Barrett(VIF) – The young speedster replica soccer jerseys manufacturers was successful in his midweek injury return, so he should retain a place on right wing as the champs try to regain the summit against a team that has given them all sorts of trouble at Aker Stadion over the years.

After notching his first Tippeligaen assist in last week’s win, Barrett should hold his place up top for Vålerenga. The Pride of Oslo have won four of the last six at Molde, despite falling there – in part thanks to a Gatt goal – last season.

PHILADELPHIA – Depending on who you ask, you are bound replica soccer jerseys manufacturers to get a different answer.

Which Chelsea team is stronger: the one that lost to the 2006 All-Stars or the European champions who take on MLS’ best on Wednesday night at PPL Park?

Blues captain Frank Lampard (above) was part of both those teams and was asked that question at Tuesday’s press conference. And although he didn’t necessarily pick a side, he sees a distinct difference between the two squads.

“It’s literally two different eras,” Lampard said. “This year, we’re maybe a slightly different team because of the fact that we have some more young players coming in and there might not be the settled togetherness that we had on the pitch at that stage [in 2006] because we had been together a long time. But there’s an excitement about our team [in 2012] which is probably the main difference.”

replica soccer jerseys manufacturers Caps’ Rennie- Robson “will be involved” against Rapids_2

“It’s not easy to get in the team at the moment, because they had four really good results before that so I have to bide my time. If it’s not Wednesday, hopefully it will be Saturday.”

While head coach Martin Rennie wasn’t willing to say one way or the other as to whether Robson will start, the club’s newest Designated Player will see at least a little time on the pitch by the sounds of it.

“He’ll be involved,” Rennie said. “Whether he starts or not we’re still not 100 percent sure, but he looked really good today and he has looked very good in training. His fitness is good. He understands the game well and he knows the time will come where he’s starting or making a contribution for us off the bench, but I think he’s very close to replica soccer jerseys manufacturers being ready to start.”

Robson admits he doesn’t know much about the Rapids, but is aware of the tough conditions teams playing in Denver must endure.

“I know that it’s hot, that it’s humid and that it’s high,” Robson said. “That’s what I’ve been told. We’ll wait and see how it is. It’s a learning curve for me as well. It’s going to be a tough game, but I’m looking forward to it, so fingers crossed we can win the game.”

GUADALAJkid soccer uniformARA, Mexico – Only two players are left flying the American flag south of the border this weekend as the Mexican and Guatemalan championships come to a boil.

Herculez Gomez's Santos Laguna took on defending champions Tigres UANL on Thursday evening, coming away from the packed Estadio Universitario with a healthy 1-1 draw in the first leg of their semifinals.

Gomez came on for the last 15 minutes of the game and helped unsettle the Tigres defense as los Guerreros comfortably defended the 1-1 scoreline.

The 2010 World Cup veteran could become the first American to appear in a Primera División final in Mexico since José Francisco Torres in the Clausura 2009 finals. Jeff Cunningham is back from injury and played five minutes on Thursday in Comunicaciones' 0-0 tie with archrivals Municipal in the semifinal first leg in Guatemala's first division.

replica soccer jerseys manufacturers Bernier says Montreal “should have won” vs. Dynamo_1

The Montreal Impact’s preseason training camp in Orlando, Fla., has been physically demanding. And if their 1-1 draw against the Houston Dynamo in Wednesday’s match at the Disney Pro Soccer Classic is any indication, the work they’ve put in has paid off handsomely.

“That game was our very best yet,” Bernier told MLSsoccer.com by replica soccer jerseys manufacturers phone from Orlando. “We should have won comfortably. … We learned good lessons from the defeat to Vancouver which, it is fair to say, was our worst game this preseason. Then the second game [against Sporting Kansas City] was a good opportunity to rotate the squad, and while there was a slight lack of fluidity, 1-1 was a good result.”

Montreal pressured constantly throughout their match against Houston, keeping the Dynamo mostly at bay. But given who’s running the show, that shouldn’t surprise anyone.

“[Impact head coach] Jesse Marsch knows this league, he knows how demanding it is physically,” Bernier said. “He has told us how important it is to put pressure on opponents, to win aerial duels, and I think the way we played 90 minutes two days ago shows that.”
